Pulse Testing Explained
Pulse testing provides proof that your property has not been made more air tight by the installation of replacement windows or doors. A test is completed before the removal of the existing windows and after the installation has been completed.
Upon a successful result, you will receive a certificate that provides both test results and confirms that the air tightness of your property has been made no worse by the installation of your new windows and doors. This can be provided to anyone enquiring as to why vents have not been installed such as Local Authority Building Control, a competent person scheme inspector or any conveyancing surveyor.
Why Now?
The updated Building Regulations came into effect on 15th June 2022. Those changes meant that the addition of trickle vents to replacement windows and doors are required in the majority of cases.
However, if you are not making the air infiltration any worse, i.e. more air tight, then you don’t need those extra vents. This must be proven though in order for the installation to comply with Building Regulations.
What Does This Mean For Trickle Vents?
Trickle Vents will still be installed in a lot of windows and doors, this simply provides homeowners with an alternative.
Our co.uks have found that where windows are replaced like for like, i.e. PVC for PVC, the thermal efficiency is much improved. However the air tightness often remains the same, technology has not needed to improve in the same way as thermal performance. When this is evidenced extra background ventilation is not required.
Pulse Testing FAQ's
What happens if it fails?
Our pre-survey will eliminate the installations that are not suitable for pulse testing. However, if it is found that the installation has made the building more airtight then background ventilation will have to be installed.
What type of products are suitable?
All replacement windows on the market are suitable as long as they are no more airtight than the windows being replaced.
How long does it take?
This depends on the size and complexity of the property, however, most initial tests will take around 25- 30 minutes. The second test will be around 15-20 minutes.
Can I be in the house?
Absolutely, the test has been designed so that people can go about their business in their homes whilst they test is prepared. We just ask that everyone stays still for the 20 seconds of the actual test itself as moving around can affect the readings.
Is it dangerous?
Not at all. The test is a controlled release of compressed air at low pressure. You can’t even feel it, they only way you know the test is running is there are two bursts of sound that last around 2 seconds each, they sound like static from an old radio or TV set.
Do you need access to power?
Yes, we will need access to a single plug socket to power the compressor and sensors.
